Acapella, A capella, or A cappella

What is an acapella, a capella, or a cappella?

An acapella, a capella, or a cappella are all the same thing, they are just different spellings which have came about over the years, I will stick to using acapella. Acapellas are simply just the vocals of a song, without the instrumental beat in the background. The term originates from the 19th century, Italian phrase "in the manner of the church" or "in the manner of the chapel".

Acapella can refer to an acapella vocal solo or group performance where it is intended to be only vocals, however today's use mainly refers to the vocals being extracted from a song so DJs and producers can create remixes, mashups, and blends from them. The later is probably how you are intending to use the acapellas which you find on this website.

Where can I get acapellas?

If you are looking for acapellas from mainstream artists you will be able to find them on 12" vinyls, CD singles, or available for you to download online from websites similar to this one, however most other acapella websites will require a "donation" or for you to sign up to a subscription, while we offer them free of charge.

Occasionally artists will release an acapella album, artists which have done this in recent years include Jay-Z, Eminem, Nas, Ludacris, and AZ. Also, off the top of my head other artists which have released acapella albums include Michael Jackson, 2Pac, Notorious B.I.G. Old School Hip Hop used to release vinyl compilation albums featuring acapellas from artists such as Public Enemy, Rakim, KRS-One, De La Soul, Lil Kim, Black Eyed Peas, Method Man, Redman, and Raekwon.

As you can probably guess from the list of artists above, the easiest genres to find acapellas for are Hip Hop, and R&B, but not to worry as there are websites out there which offer vocal samples from non mainstream hip hop and r&b artists, and of various genres such as pop, dance, techno, house, reggae, reggaeton, and if you're lucky you will also be able to find some rock and metal acapellas. (Hint: You're on one of such websites)

The Beastie Boys are one of the few artists who actively encourage DJs, and producers to use their acapellas, and have released 30+ official acapellas for free download from their website.

What can I use acapellas for?

Common uses for acapellas are to create remixes, mashups or blends.

Remixes are an altered version of an original song. This could be changing elements of the song such as the tempo, pitch, equalization, dynamics, adding or removing elements, or even going as far as to changing the arrangement of the track.

Mashups or Blends (also known as bootlegs) is when you take two or more tracks and blend them together to create an original sounding track. It could be as simple as laying an acapella over an instrumental beat, or laying multiple acapellas over multiple beats. Be careful as to what you are blending, as laying just anything over something else will not sound good, if it was as simple as that everybody would be doing it. Well, it seems everybody is doing it these days, but not all of their remixes, mashups, or blends sound good, do they? The main point is that you have fun!
